The Memphis Grizzlies (13-7) claimed their first NBA Cup victory in franchise history, defeating the injury-riddled New Orleans Pelicans (4-16) 120-109 on Friday night. Ja Morant led the charge with 27 points and seven assists, continuing Memphis’ recent hot streak.
Jaren Jackson Jr. contributed 23 points and eight rebounds, while Santi Aldama scored 20 points on an efficient 8-for-9 shooting performance.
Memphis displayed remarkable ball movement, dishing out 36 assists on 47 made field goals, extending their league-leading assist average to 30 per game.
New Orleans, plagued by injuries, was without Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, Herbert Jones, and Jose Alvarado. Despite these absences, CJ McCollum led all scorers with 30 points, supported by Dejounte Murray and Trey Murphy III, who added 21 points each. Yves Missi, the Pelicans’ rookie center, recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
The Pelicans struggled to keep pace after Memphis built a double-digit lead in the second half. Jaren Jackson Jr.’s timely baskets and a crucial three-pointer from Jake LaRavia helped the Grizzlies secure a 15-point cushion entering the fourth quarter.
Memphis also showcased depth, with 11 players logging significant minutes. Marcus Smart added 11 points and six assists, while Luke Kennard and Jay Huff combined for 10 points off the bench. The Grizzlies capitalized on the Pelicans’ lack of firepower, holding them to 41.8% shooting from the field.
The Pelicans had a glimmer of hope when they cut the deficit in the third quarter, but Memphis’ dominance on the boards and steady offense proved too much. The Grizzlies outrebounded the Pelicans 51-46, with Brandon Clarke grabbing 11 rebounds to lead the effort.
New Orleans has now lost seven straight games and 13 of their last 14, further complicating their season.
For Memphis, the win marked their fifth straight victory, showcasing improved chemistry and execution on both ends of the court.
