Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia has expressed his full commitment to extending Kevin Durant’s tenure with the team.

As the Suns focus on a third consecutive postseason appearance, Ishbia revealed his intentions to keep the 14-time All-Star in Phoenix for the long term.

Ishbia shared his confidence in Durant’s future with the Suns during an interview with ESPN. “We expect Kevin to sign an extension, be with us for the long term. We hope he finishes his career here in Phoenix,” Ishbia said, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

The Suns owner emphasized that Durant’s contributions to the team have been pivotal. “He’s off to an amazing start this season—one of the MVP leaders—and we’re off to a very good start,” Ishbia added.

Durant has been integral to the team’s success, with his performance this season further solidifying his importance.

The 36-year-old superstar is currently in the third year of his four-year, $194 million contract with Phoenix.

The veteran forward has posted impressive numbers to begin the 2024-25 season, averaging 27.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 38.8 minutes per game.

Despite his age, Durant continues to be one of the most dominant players in the league, and Ishbia’s comments reinforce the Suns’ desire to keep him around for the foreseeable future.

“Kevin wants to be here, we want Kevin here. There’s never been one grumbling of anything different,” Ishbia added.

The Suns have made significant progress since acquiring Durant in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets in 2023. His leadership and scoring ability have been key factors in Phoenix’s rise as a contender. The team is currently 7th in the Western Conference with a 9-7 record.

Although Durant’s contract does not allow for a two-year extension this summer, the Suns are prepared to begin negotiations after the season.
