NBA commissioner Adam Silver has attributed the league’s sluggish ratings at the start of the season to competing events like the World Series and the presidential election.

“I think we’re just looking at a couple weeks of ratings, there’s always some unique things, this year we were up against a World Series … you had a presidential election which was commanding an enormous amount of attention,” Silver noted.

He explained that the lower ratings should be seen as part of a larger context, where major events such as the highly anticipated World Series and a closely watched election cycle took precedence over sports broadcasts.

According to Silver, these factors were significant enough to divert attention away from the NBA, but he believes this is just a temporary situation and that the overall ratings will stabilize as the season progresses.
