Golden State Warriors veteran Draymond Green recently addressed his future with the team, expressing his desire to finish his career in the Bay Area. However, he acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the NBA.
In a candid interview with Marc J. Spears of Andscape, Green reflected on the fragility of team dynamics and how quickly circumstances can change. He emphasized that, despite his confidence in staying with the Warriors, nothing is ever certain in professional sports.
Green’s remarks were influenced by Klay Thompson’s unexpected departure, which served as a reminder that even the most stable situations can shift overnight. “One day, everything we know comes to an end,” Green said, noting how quickly rosters and team dynamics can evolve.
At 34 years old, Green is in the second year of a four-year, $100 million contract. While his current deal solidifies his place in Golden State, Green was open about the reality of change in the league. “Wholeheartedly, I believe I will finish my career here, but things change,” he said, emphasizing that factors beyond his or the Warriors’ control could alter that path.
Green also spoke about his mindset when contemplating the end of his playing career. Initially, he was firm on when he might retire, but recent experiences have caused him to reconsider. “I was so set on [retirement] two years ago, but this summer, I confused myself even more,” Green admitted, revealing that he now feels his body is far from reaching the end.
The four-time NBA champion expressed that he’s focused on enjoying every moment, rather than planning for retirement prematurely. “Stop planning,” Green said. “When it happens, it happens, but stop trying to end it on your terms by ending too soon.”
Last season, Green averaged 8.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and six assists in 27.1 minutes per game. Known for his defensive prowess and leadership, Green has been a critical part of the Warriors’ dynasty alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
As Green enters his 13th season with Golden State, his role on the court and in the locker room remains significant. Despite the uncertainty he acknowledged, Green’s commitment to the Warriors is clear, and his leadership will be crucial as the team navigates another competitive season.
