Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has credited Greek basketball legend Vassilis Spanoulis for reshaping his mindset and reigniting his competitive spirit. Antetokounmpo recently shared how Spanoulis pushed him during their time together with the Greek national team, ultimately influencing his approach to the upcoming NBA season.

Spanoulis, known for his intensity and success in European basketball, challenged Antetokounmpo during Greece’s Olympic campaign. Despite Antetokounmpo’s standout performances, Spanoulis constantly demanded more from him, particularly on the defensive end.

“Spanoulis has changed the way I think about things,” said Antetokounmpo, via Sam Amick of The Athletic. The Bucks forward explained that Spanoulis taught him to never settle, reminding him to push harder and demand more from himself and his teammates.

Spanoulis’ influence came at a crucial time for Antetokounmpo, as the Bucks face high expectations for the 2024-25 season. After a disappointing playoff exit last season, Milwaukee is looking to make a deep run with new additions like Damian Lillard and head coach Doc Rivers.

Antetokounmpo’s desire to win is stronger than ever, thanks to the lessons learned from Spanoulis. “All this conversation made me realize that I crave the challenge again,” he said. This renewed mindset, coupled with his health, will be key for the Bucks as they aim to contend in the competitive Eastern Conference.
