Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen recently sat down for an interview with The Stein Line where he opened up about various topics, including the trade rumors that circulated throughout the summer before he ultimately signed a contract extension with the Jazz.

Reflecting on the rumors, Markkanen shared his perspective on being a sought-after player: “I mean … it’s cool to know that you’re wanted and it means that you’ve done something right on the basketball court that teams would like to get you. … I was able to take it pretty easy and not worry about it.” Despite the buzz around potential interest from other teams, Markkanen remained calm and unfazed, knowing his value on the court.

Any uncertainty surrounding his future was put to rest when he and the Jazz worked out a renegotiation-and-extend contract, ensuring his continued presence in Utah. “Obviously I wasn’t a free agent, but it was more I had the ability to do the contract and kind of had the choice,” Markkanen explained. “I don’t have to do it, but that was something I wanted to get done to stay with the team.”

One key factor in his decision to stay with the Jazz was his appreciation for the lifestyle in Utah, which reminds him of his native Finland. “It reminds me of home I guess. It’s very Finland-like – outdoors. I’m an outdoor person. It’s not as much water as we have in Finland, but like I said, I’m an outdoor person. I want to go outside,” Markkanen said, highlighting his love for the outdoor environment in the Salt Lake City area.

Markkanen’s decision to remain with the Jazz reflects both his comfort with the team and his personal connection to the Utah landscape, which mirrors the natural beauty of his home country.
