Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations, Daryl Morey, acknowledged that the team’s aggressive pursuit of Paul George during free agency came with its risks, but he firmly believes the move has elevated the Sixers into serious title contention.

In a conversation with Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic, Morey expressed confidence in the team’s potential after securing George’s services.

“I feel like we’re one of the top few teams,” Morey said, emphasizing that the addition of George positions the Sixers among the elite. “I think Boston’s pretty clearly the team that deserves to be called the favorite.

“They had an outstanding season last year, playing at a historically high level. But I believe we have a real chance to join that upper tier, to be in the mix with them, and ultimately, to beat them this year.”

Morey’s remarks reflect his optimism about the Sixers’ newfound firepower, acknowledging that while Boston remains a formidable opponent, the acquisition of George gives Philadelphia a legitimate opportunity to challenge for the championship.

By adding another star to a roster already featuring Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the Sixers hope to break through the Eastern Conference and contend for their first title since 1983.
