Nine-time All-Star Paul George, widely regarded as the most accomplished player to switch teams during this summer’s free agency, made headlines by securing a significant four-year, $212 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.
This high-profile move came with much anticipation, and George’s first appearance in a Sixers uniform took place in their preseason matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.
In his debut, George showcased his offensive prowess, putting up 23 points on efficient 8-of-15 shooting from the field, while also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out two assists in just 26 minutes of play, as reported by The Associated Press.
Though it was only a preseason contest, George’s performance offered a tantalizing preview of the potential for the 76ers when their new star trio – consisting of George, reigning MVP Joel Embiid, and young rising star Tyrese Maxey – are all in sync and healthy.
Tony Jones of The Athletic noted that this glimpse into the team’s future could be seen as a promising sign of what’s to come for Philadelphia.
Tyrese Maxey, clearly impressed by George’s abilities, was enthusiastic about his new teammate’s fit within the team.
“He’s pretty good at basketball,” Maxey remarked with a grin when asked about George’s performance. “I can definitely see the vision for this team. My goal tonight was to help him get comfortable and settle into his role. It’s amazing to see the things he can do on the floor.
“Tonight, I wanted to take a step back and observe, just to see how he fits in and how I can help him adjust. It was great seeing him out there, and I’m excited to see how we can build chemistry going forward.”
George’s ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor, paired with Embiid’s dominance in the paint and Maxey’s explosive scoring, creates a formidable foundation for the 76ers as they aim to contend for a championship.
While preseason games may not carry the weight of regular season or playoff matchups, George’s early showing with the team gave the Sixers faithful reason to be optimistic about their chances heading into the 2024-2025 season.
