Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has faced significant scrutiny since his hiring. Many questioned Redick’s qualifications due to his lack of professional coaching experience.

On the Lowe Post Podcast with Zach Lowe, the rookie coach addressed those concerns head-on. Redick made it clear that his appointment as head coach wasn’t a shortcut.

“There are only 30 of us,” Redick explained, as reported by ClutchPoints. He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Lakers, stating, “There hasn’t been a moment that I haven’t felt an extreme level of gratitude.”

“Yes, I feel lucky to have this opportunity, but I know I deserved this opportunity as well,” Redick said.

He emphasized that his basketball journey spans 32 years of hard work and preparation. Redick didn’t rely on the traditional path of working as an assistant coach.

“It’s not because I spent seven years as an assistant coach. It’s because I’ve worked my a** off on this craft of basketball for the last 32 years,” Redick asserted.

His 15-year NBA playing career, paired with a passion for studying the game, laid the foundation for his coaching role.

During his playing career, Redick earned respect as a sharpshooter and basketball savant.

After retiring, Redick transitioned to media, launching his successful podcast, The Old Man and the Three.

Despite being new to coaching, Redick believes his experience and basketball IQ make him a deserving candidate.

“I’m in this position because of that, not because I skipped the line,” Redick explained, defending his qualifications.

Redick acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his success but is determined to prove his doubters wrong.

“I think there’s a little bit of a misconception around the idea of someone deserving something or not,” Redick said.

He explained that each organization must find the right coach based on their unique needs and goals.

Redick also hopes that other former players will get similar opportunities to coach in the NBA.
