Kenny Smith recently stated that Bronny James deserved to be the No. 55 pick by the Lakers in the 2024 NBA Draft. Smith defended the Lakers’ decision amidst criticism over Bronny’s selection.
Many have questioned the choice, citing Bronny’s performance during his lone season at USC. He averaged just 4.8 points in 19.3 minutes per game, finishing as the eighth-leading scorer for the Trojans.
Critics argued that the pick was influenced more by nepotism than merit. Concerns were also raised about other players with more impressive collegiate achievements being overlooked.
Bronny James struggled during Summer League play as well. He averaged 8.8 points per game on 35.0% shooting from the field and 15.8% from three-point range.
Despite these struggles, Smith believes the pick was justified. “I think as the 55th pick he deserved that,” Smith said in an interview with RG.org. He highlighted that such picks are often developmental, reflecting a long-term investment rather than immediate returns.
Smith emphasized Bronny’s high school accolades, noting he was a McDonald’s All-American and a top guard in his class. “That means that when you’re in that second round, we’re waiting on you, we’re waiting for you to develop,” Smith explained.
He also drew a parallel with Isaiah Collier, a USC teammate who was drafted in the first round. Collier, too, faced challenges despite high expectations. “The same kid who played with him at USC, Isaiah Collier, was drafted in the first round. He didn’t have a great year either in terms of USC basketball,” Smith pointed out.
