Isiah Thomas recently offered insight into why modern NBA players appear faster compared to those from previous eras.

In response to Anthony Edwards’ comments about Michael Jordan’s skill compared to today’s players, Thomas pointed out the impact of rule changes.

“The only skill ‘emphasized’ more is the 3-point shot, creating the illusion that the athlete and skills have magically evolved into another athletic species,” Thomas tweeted.

Thomas elaborated on the effect of these rule changes, noting they favor offensive players by limiting defensive contact.

“They look faster today because of the rule change, which prohibits holding and hand-checking to impede progress,” Thomas explained.

He compared this to football, where rule changes benefit wide receivers, allowing them to accumulate more yardage without fear of heavy contact.
