Sasha Vezenkov, former EuroLeague MVP, has decided to leave the NBA after just one year.
The Bulgarian forward forfeited $6.6 million to become a free agent and return to Europe.
Vezenkov signed a three-year deal with the Sacramento Kings last season but was traded to the Toronto Raptors earlier this offseason.
Blake Murphy tweeted that the Raptors have waived Vezenkov and Javon Freeman-Liberty.
Freeman-Liberty had only a $100K guarantee, increasing to $150K tomorrow and $800K if he made the opening day roster.
Vezenkov now has the freedom to sign with any team. Reportedly, his former team, Olympiacos, as well as their arch rival Panathinaikos are interested in him.
The Raptors’ cap space will depend on Vezenkov’s buyout and incentive assumptions.
Vezenkov left the entire $6,658,536 on the table in the buyout, with the Raptors paying nothing.
The Raptors now have about $11M in breathing room beneath the luxury tax.
They could use a chunk of the mid-level exception or opt for a minimum/camp battle for the final spot.
This past season, Vezenkov averaged 5.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 12.2 minutes per game for the Kings.
He was unhappy with the lack of playing time and opportunities in the NBA.
Vezenkov’s return to Europe highlights his preference for more playing time and opportunities.
The Raptors now have an open NBA roster spot and flexibility for in-season moves.
