Former NBA star Chris Webber recently delved into the enduring legacy of the Sacramento Kings’ offense, highlighting its influence on the modern Golden State Warriors.
Webber reminisced about the Kings’ formidable team, often hailed as one of the best to never secure an NBA title, which featured talents like himself, Vlade Divac, Peja Stojakovic, and Mike Bibby.
During Webber’s tenure with the Kings, the team achieved significant success, including multiple deep playoff runs and Western Conference finals appearances.
He emphasized that the Warriors’ initial championship victory utilized elements of the Kings’ playbook, particularly the corner action featuring versatile big men capable of both shooting and passing.
Despite falling short of a championship, Webber expressed pride in the Kings’ legacy, acknowledging the formidable opponents they encountered during their playoff runs.
“[…] we’re one of the best teams to never win. And the great thing about it’s our offense still is in effect today,” Webber noted on Green Light with Chris Long podcast.
“When Golden State won their first championship, that’s our offense that they use. It’s corner action where you have a big guy that can shoot and pass on the corner…”
According to Webber, the Warriors’ success with the Kings’ offensive style underscores its adaptability and continued relevance in modern basketball.
“We’re one of the best teams never to win. And I don’t necessarily like that title, but at the end of the day, it’s true. And when you look at that team, we lost to with those monsters on it. If you did your best, you can go home and be okay,” Webber reflected.
