On their final game of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Egypt at least saved the best for last after shattering Mexico, 100-72, within Pasay’s Mall of Asia Arena on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
The matchup was already one-sided since first-half as the Egyptians led by as many as 27 and went on to carry the momentum until the final buzzer against the helpless Mexican squad.
Five players tallied double-digit scoring for Egypt with Ehab Amin at the front with his 22 points and ten dimes. Patrick Gardner followed up his 20 markers, while Assem Marei logged 16.
Joshua Ibarra and Paco Cruz led Mexico on a losing effort with 21 points each.
The Egyptians will enter the classification phase with their heads held high as the victory snapped their 29-year wait for a World Cup win. They’ve lost 19 straight preliminary-round games before tonight.
Holding a 2-0 record already, Group D will be represented by both Montenegro and Lithuania in the second round of the World Cup’s Group Phase.
