The Cleveland Cavaliers have expressed interest in acquiring restricted free agent P.J. Washington, per Chris Fedor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
But amid this intent, there haven’t been any substantial trade or meaningful discussions of a trade occurring yet between the Cavs and the Charlotte Hornets.
“Cleveland has expressed interest in acquiring Washington, and there’s a belief it is lurking, there haven’t been any extensive, detailed or meaningful trade discussions with Charlotte at this point.”
Washington remains stuck in this year’s market. As Fedor pointed out, the big man is seeking a new contract that will give him an annual $20MM salary – a desire that the Hornets are hesitant to fetch.
The 24-year-old is coming off a solid year averaging 15.7 points, 4.9 boards and 44.4 percent shooting from the field. These numbers are quietly impressive, but it would be a definite overpay if matched up by a deal with a $20MM yearly pay.
With most of the team’s salary cap already filled by earlier signings this offseason, Washington can indeed only hope for a sign-and-trade pact to meet his new contract wishes.
Cleveland already manages to execute a sign-and-trade deal this summer starring Max Strus, inking the swingman to a four-year contract worth $63MM.
