Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson recently unveiled an intriguing aspect of his friendship with fellow star Steph Curry. The dynamic duo, renowned as the Splash Brothers, didn’t establish a close bond until their third year as teammates. Surprisingly, their camaraderie blossomed during an unexpected encounter on the golf course while representing Team USA.

Thompson candidly recounted, “I don’t think me and Steph said a word to each other the first year to be honest.” Their initial interactions were minimal, given Curry’s limited playtime and Thompson’s quiet demeanor. It wasn’t until their third season that their connection began to flourish.

The turning point came when both players found themselves on Team USA’s roster. “Our relationship really didn’t build til our third year when we played for that Team USA,” Thompson explained during a conversation with Paul George on Podcast P.

Stranded on the Canary Islands with time to spare, they ventured out to play golf, an activity that inadvertently deepened their bond. Thompson elaborated, “We finally hung out off the court cause we had nothing else to do and where were we? Like Canary Islands. We had nothing else to do so we went and played golf. We finally got to know each other on the golf course.”

Sharing the memory of that unique golf outing, Thompson laughed and said, “We played with Dominique Wilkins and Clyde Drexler. That was so much fun playing with them. Clyde just kept making fun of us, like ‘Look at these country club swings’ and I’m just, like ‘Thanks Clyde.’ So that was a good memory. That’s the first time me and Steph actually talked to each other… After the third season.”
