Lakers point guard Dennis Schroder recently opened up about his past issues with Kyrie Irving, shedding light on their altercation from two years ago and subsequent reconciliation. The incident occurred during a game in Brooklyn, where Schroder felt Irving’s physicality on defense was excessive. Tempers flared, leading to a heated exchange and ejections for both players.

“C’mon, n—-!” Schroder shouted at Irving who shouted back by saying, “You can’t say that! You’re from Germany!” Schroder, who was born in Germany to a Gambian mother, was taken aback when Irving made a comment about his nationality during their confrontation.

Reflecting on the incident, Schroder admitted his surprise and sought answers from LeBron James, his teammate at the time. James advised him to let it go. “I was shocked. I’m not going to lie,” he said. “I asked LeBron, ‘Why did he act like that?’ LeBron said, ‘I don’t know, just let it go.’”

Their paths crossed again this past February when the Lakers faced the Mavericks. During the game, Irving approached Schroder and offered a heartfelt apology, acknowledging that his actions were out of character. Schroder was deeply moved by the gesture and expressed his appreciation for Irving’s sincerity.

“He said he was going through something at the time and that’s why he reacted like that,” Schroder said. “To say that, and you’re such a powerful player? That means everything.”

The apology sparked a renewed respect between the two players, leading to a jersey swap and a reconciliation reminiscent of their early years in the league. Schroder now sees Irving not only as a talented player but also as a person deserving of respect.
