The new Washington Wizards President Michael Winger is determined to transform the team into a perennial contender. Since the team changed its name from the Bullets to the Wizards in 1997, it made the playoffs 9 of 26 seasons. Washington did not progress past the second round in any of those years.

“The eventual expectation is that we’re going to build a generational contender,” Winger said. “We’re going to eventually have a team that is competing for championships. I can’t promise when that’ll be, but there’s no excuse for the lone NBA team in Washington DC not to be a perennial contender or at least be pursuing championships.

“So that’s the goal. The goal is to pursue championships by any means necessary. It’ll take time and it’s going to start on the ground floor. Not just players, not just coaches. It’s everything. We’re gong to do everything a little bit better tomorrow than it’s being done today. That’s the mantra we’re going to take into every day. Eventually we’re going to hoist a trophy here in DC. I just can’t promise when.”
