Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu has said that the British Basketball League will not receive a possible wildcard entry into next season’s competition at a breakfast held earlier this morning.

Only specific members of the media from the established countries where the Euroleague is a strong product were invited to the breakfast.

The UK media, two accredited journalists and one blogger, who are present in Madrid, were not invited.

The news, obtained from Greek website Eurohoops, comes after the BBL Playoff Final was staged for the first time at the 02 Arena in London last Sunday and drew 14,700 fans, more than the two Final Four semi-finals staged when the Euroleague brought their product over to England’s capital city in 2013.

“The UK does not have the prerequisites to get a wildcard for next season,” Bertomeu said. “There is not a competitive team there.”

The minimum amount needed to enter the Euroleague is €4million, and while the BBL are making slow steps towards making the league of reasonable strength. They would be the first to say that they are not ready for the Euroleague.
