Darius Songaila has officially joined Zalgiris Kaunas for one season in a rather rare move – directly from rivals Lietuvos Rytas.

Veteran forward, who turns 37 next February, described his move to Zalgiris as a “dream come true”.

“Playing in Kaunas will not only be interesting and comfortable but also I will finally get a chance to represent this legendary team”, Songail told to the club’s website.

Songaila has a wealth of experience that will be useful, especially in Euroleague. He spent eight seasons in NBA and many summers with Lithuanian national team.

With the addition of Songaila Zalgiris compelted its front court which now consists of Robertas Javtokas, Darius Songaila, Paulius Jankunas, Arturas Gudaitis and Mindaugas Kupsas.

Kupsas’s future in Kaunas is in doubt though. Coach Gintaras Krapikas told that a very serious conversation with Kupsas regarding his future is about to take place.

Currently Zalgiris is unable to sing players from abroad due to a FIBA ban. However, best efforts are made to terminate the ban, coach Krapikas told.

Songaila comes from another Lithuanian team, therefore, the ban is not effective in this case.

It was also announced that forward Tadas Klimavicius is leaving Kaunas side.
