David Blatt moved on from Maccabi Electra by becoming head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers on June 20, but he is still winning awards from the Euroleague.

The man who guided Maccabi Electra to an unlikely Euroleague title in Milan in May has today been announced as the Alexander Gomelskiy Coach of the Year.

Blatt beat EA7 Milano coach Luca Banchi to the award, as the Italian had to settle for second. Real Madrid’s Pablo Laso claimed third.

Going into this past season’s Final Four, many people were writing off Maccabi’s chances. They arrived in Milan without a player in its All-Tournament team and when they were down by 15 against CSKA Moscow in the opening semi-final, a lot of people were preparing for Maccabi’s demise.

Maccabi though, led by Blatt fought back and went on to win the game and then beat the favourites Real Madrid in the championship game after a session of overtime.

Then a month later, Blatt realised his dream by becoming an NBA coach, as he accepted a three-year deal with the Cavs.

The announcement of the award might be a little late, but the reward for the season of his life in Tel Aviv is richly deserved. He can now add Coach of the Year to his gleaming resume, along with Eurobasket gold medallist, Euroleague title winner, multiple Israeli league champion and helping Russia to the Olympic bronze in London in 2012.
