The BBL Cup began this weekend with three games along with four regular season contests and when it the weekend concluded, the Worcester Wolves found themselves top of the pile.

The Wolves had no trouble defeating the Manchester Giants 88-66 in the first round of the BBL Cup on Friday night at the Worcester Arena.

Will Creekmore led the way for the Wolves with 24 points as the hosts built a 54-30 advantage at half-time thanks to a 13-0 run that ran from the first into the second period, making it near-impossible for the Giants to mount any form of a comeback.

Alex Owumi added 23 points for Worcester. David Aliu led Manchester with 15.

The Wolves then made it six wins in all this season after a comprehensive 100-59 league win at the Birmingham Knights on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors put pressure on the Knights from the beginning, racing to a 17-1 lead and never looking back.

A double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds from Andreas Schreiber led Worcester. Martyn Gayle led Birmingham with 16 points.

That was the second defeat of the weekend for the Knights as they were beaten 103-72 at home to the Plymouth Raiders in the BBL Cup.

The Raiders were relentless to begin proceedings, leading 37-18 after one period of play and giving Birmingham no shot of a comeback.

Donald Robinson had a game-high 26 points for the winners. Brent Benson had 22 for the Knights.

Plymouth made it a double-winning weekend with an easy 97-63 success over Surrey United on Sunday afternoon.

Trevor Setty led Plymouth with 22 points. Lithuanian Cesolvas Kucinskas led Surrey United 17.

The Guildford-based club’s fortunes started off in the worst way as they were victims of an incredibly one-sided 107-38 drubbing at the hands of the BBL champions, the Leicester Riders on Saturday night.

Leading 24-4 after one quarter of play, Leicester showed no mercy as they cruised to third place in the BBL standings, while holding their third straight opponent to below 45 points.

Connor Washington led the Riders with 16.

Elsewhere in the BBL, there were wins for the Newcastle Eagles, as they beat the Glasgow Rocks 98-70 on Tyneside.

Charles Smith led Newcastle with a game-high 24 points. Daniel Northern led Glasgow with 17 points.

The other BBL Cup tie saw Durham Wildcats come from behind to beat the Cheshire Phoenix 78-75.

Danny Huffor led the victorious Wildcats with 17 points as they fought back from 11 points down in the second to record the win.

Reggie Middleton led all scorers for the Phoenix with 25.
