It has been confirmed via British basketball site MVP 24/7 that Manchester City Council is interested in bringing regular season NBA clashes to the city in 2014.

Council representatives, currently in Orlando for All-Star Weekend have been given assurances that a pre-season NBA game will take place in Manchester in 2013 but the thought of a regular season encounter is also on the agenda.

“We are keen to have a meaningful relationship with the NBA year on year after 2013, said Neil Fairlamb, who is the council’s head of sport.

“We want a regular season game. We like the pre-season stuff but we want a competitive game and we’re talking to the NBA about what might be possible. We’re going to be in disscussions with them.”

It’s an exciting time for basketball in Manchester right now, with confirmation of the dates and ticket information released for Great Britain’s pre-Olympic game against the USA at the MEN Arena and the possibility of the rebirth of the Manchester Giants franchise for the British Basketball League, their application though is pending but they could feature in the BBL next season if successful.

Manchester hosted a WNBA exhibition game last year between the Atlanta Dream and Great Britain, as part of the Dream’s warm-up to the WNBA season and GB’s preparation for Eurobasket Women. The event was seen as a huge success.
