Five teams remain unbeaten after Day 3 in Varna

Bulgaria U18Five teams remained unbeaten after Day 3 of the U18 Men European Championship in Varna, Bulgaria. These are Bulgaria, Hungary, Denmark, Romania and the Slovak Republic.

The hosts from Bulgaria achieved a win today, while Montenegro suffered a surprising loss against Switzerland. In another interesting game, Sweden overcame Israel after overtime.

In Group A the home side Bulgaria remained unbeaten, after they won against Georgia 55:67. Pavlin Ivanov had 15 points, while Tencho Tenchev added 14 in the second straight win for the Bulgarian youngsters. Hungary also remained with a perfect record, after beating Luxembourg 58:79. Bulgaria and Hungary will play in a direct battle for the first spot tomorrow night.

In Group B Belgium suffered their first loss of the tournament, after they fell short against Estonia – 47:54. Rait Riivo-Laaine scored 20 for Estonia, along with 4 assists and 4 steals. England suffered their second straight loss, after they were defeated 42:60 by Denmark. Esben Reinholt scored 16 points in Denmark’s win, while Jamie Batish had 12 for England.

In Group C Montenegro took a surprising loss against Netherlands. Miodrag Kadija’s squad lost 57:62, despite 17 points by Milos Pajovic. Mike Schilder scored 13 for Netherlands in their win. In the other game in this group Romania remained unbeaten, after a 52:64 win against Austria. Alexandru Olah was the top performer for the winners with 15 points and 18 boards.

The Slovak Republic moved up to 3-0 in Group D, after a big win against Norway – 66:99. Boris Bojanovsky had 25 points and 10 boards in just 24 minutes, while Simon Krajcevic added 22 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds. Sweden needed overtime to beat Israel, as after the extra period the final score was 85:80. Jesper Eliasson dominated the paint with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Three other players scored in double digits for Sweden, while Noam Laish impressed with 23 points for Israel.
