Brose Bamberg has hired Italian playcaller Luca Banchi as their new head coach until the end of the season with the option of staying on for 2018-19 campaign.

The 52-year-old Banchi succeeds fellow Italian coach Andrea Trinchieri, who recently parted ways with the German side on February 19, after a poor run of form that has seen them fall out of Euroleague playoff contention and has them down in unfamiliar territory in the easycredit BBL table, sitting in tenth position.

“I know that the team is in a difficult situation. My job will be to improve the team, game by game, and push them forward,” Banchi said.

A former assistant coach of the Italian national side, Banchi has won two Italian league titles with Montepaschi Siena in 2013 and 2014. He also won the Cup crown with the same club in 2013.

After starting his coaching career in 1985 as an assistant, he got his big break in 1997, when he became the head coach for Livorno. Since then, he has been heavily involved with clubs all over Italy as well as with the national side in all age groups.
