Italian Basketball Federation president Gianni Petrucci has addressed the growing speculation surrounding Luca Banchi potentially succeeding Gianmarco Pozzecco as Italy’s next national team head coach.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, Petrucci confirmed that there is indeed a plan in place for the 60-year-old tactician to take over, following Italy’s elimination at EuroBasket 2025.

“The path seems clear. I can only say he’s an excellent coach, one of the best,” Petrucci said, strongly hinting that Banchi is the chosen man to lead the Azzurri into their next FIBA challenges.

Asked if he would prefer to see Banchi dedicate himself fully to the Italian national team rather than splitting duties with a club, the federation president was straightforward: “I would prefer that. I understand that if a coach you like is busy, a different solution is possible.”

Italy’s EuroBasket campaign ended earlier than expected, despite finishing second in Group C in Limassol with a 4-1 record. Their journey was cut short in the Round of 16 after falling to Luka Doncic and Slovenia.

Petrucci admitted the disappointment but also acknowledged the opponent’s strength: “We lacked in the knockout stage, which has happened in the past. Slovenia deserved to win. They were better and more composed than us. But we were not far from advancing.”

With the Round of 16 defeat, the chapter closed for Gianmarco Pozzecco, who had been at the helm of the Azzurri since 2022. Petrucci clarified that the decision was not solely based on the loss: “His contract had expired. It was over regardless.”

Meanwhile, Luca Banchi is available after parting ways with Latvia. His run with the Baltic nation also ended in the Round of 16, as Latvia lost to Lithuania.

Since 2021, Banchi had guided Latvia, helping the team grow into one of Europe’s most competitive squads. Immediately after his exit, speculation began to swirl about him stepping in for Italy.

For Petrucci, the timing and circumstances align perfectly: a highly respected Italian coach, international experience under his belt, and the Azzurri looking for a new direction.

“The path seems clear,” he repeated, leaving little doubt about where the federation is heading.
