Klay Thompson is set to join the Miami Heat after reaching a buyout agreement with the Dallas Mavericks on his expiring $17.5 million contract.

The four-time NBA champion had made it clear to Dallas that he wanted to continue his career with a championship contender, leading the two sides to work out his departure.

Miami had made Thompson its top free-agent priority this summer and waited nearly two months for him to become available.

The Heat believe his shooting and championship experience will complement Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

According to Shams Charania, Thompson will sign a two-year deal worth nearly $13 million with Miami once he clears waivers.

The contract will include a player option for the second season.
