Day seven of the Rio Olympics sees quarter-final spots assured and teams eliminated as the day’s play is highlighted by a re-run of the 2014 FIBA World Cup final as the USA face Serbia, which is sandwiched between Australia’s clash with China and France facing off against Venezuela.

BOOMERS BOOK QUARTER-FINAL PLACE BY THUMPING CHINA

Australia coach Andrej Lemanis decided to give Andrew Bogut a rest and they were still able to beat China 93-68 to book their place in the last eight of the Olympic Basketball Tournament.

China, an Asian powerhouse but prominent strugglers in international events, fall to 0-4 and are eliminated from the Olympics.

Cameron Bairstow had seven of his team-high 17 points in the first half to lead the Aussies.

USA PUSHED TO THE LIMIT BUT THEY SNEAK PAST SERBIA

If anyone watching in the States thought this might be a repeat of the FIBA World Cup final in Madrid two summers ago, they would be sadly mistaken.

Serbia were ready this time, but despite a gallant effort, the USA survived a late three-point attempt from Bogdan Bogdanovic to seal a 94-91 win to improve to 4-0 and book their spot in the quarter-finals.

Before Serbia fought back, it looked to be heading towards another blowout when a basket from Jimmy butler gave the Americans a 27-9 cushion early on but the European side hit back and they nearly forced an extra session if Bogdanovic’s three had dropped as they fall to 1-3.

Kyrie Irving led the U.S. with 15 points.

FRANCE EASE PAST VENEZUELA

Venezuela’s Olympic dream is hanging by a thread as they were soundly beaten 96-56 by France in the final game of the day in Rio.

Les Bleus improved to 3-1 in Group A to join the USA and Australia in the last eight. Meanwhile, Venezuela dropped to 1-3 and must combine a win against the Boomers on Sunday with China beating Serbia in order to advance.

Joffrey Lauvergne paced France with 17 points, and the team as a whole shot an accurate 61 percent from the field.
