LaMelo Ball was reportedly caught off guard by his trade to the Timberwolves after entering the offseason expecting to remain with the Hornets.

According to Brian Windhorst, Ball did not anticipate being moved, as Charlotte never actively shopped him and instead evaluated offers that came their way.

The Hornets ultimately accepted Minnesota’s package, which included a 2033 first-round pick, three pick swaps, three second-round selections, and Naz Reid.

“I kind of got the impression that LaMelo didn’t see this coming,” Windhorst said.

Ball had been content in Charlotte, especially after the team’s strong finish to last season that resulted in a play-in tournament appearance.

Despite the unexpected move, the former All-Star is reportedly enthusiastic about joining Anthony Edwards in Minnesota.

The Timberwolves are viewed as one of the top contenders in the Western Conference, and Ball is eager to compete for championships alongside his new teammate.

“My understanding is LaMelo Ball is very excited to go play with Anthony Edwards to try to win championships,” Shams Charania said.

“He knows the task at hand. Those two guys, from my understanding, are friends. They’ve had communication in the recent past.”
