Jalen Duren and the Pistons are reportedly far apart in contract negotiations, prompting the restricted free agent to prepare for potential sign-and-trade discussions once they become permissible.
According to The Athletic, Duren is unhappy with Detroit’s initial contract offer despite becoming eligible for a five-year, $287.1 million maximum deal after earning All-NBA Third Team honors.
With negotiations stalled, a sign-and-trade is now viewed as the most realistic path if the two sides cannot reach an agreement.
The 22-year-old is coming off a breakout regular season in which he averaged 19.5 points and 10.0 rebounds while shooting 65 percent from the field.
He also ranked sixth in the NBA in Player Impact Estimate, helping Detroit post its best regular-season record in two decades.
However, Duren’s production declined during the playoffs, where he averaged 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds as the Pistons were eliminated in the second round.
Detroit has already been linked to several high-profile players this offseason, including Jaylen Brown, Kawhi Leonard, and Tyler Herro, after previously showing strong interest in Austin Reaves before he re-signed with the Lakers.
The Pistons also face an extension decision with Ausar Thompson while continuing to reshape their roster after trading Isaiah Stewart to Memphis.
Those financial commitments could play a significant role in determining whether Duren remains part of Detroit’s long-term plans.
