Winning a championship has given the New York Knicks stability at the top of the roster, but several important offseason decisions are approaching as the team looks to keep its title-winning group together.
The Knicks have their starting five locked in for next season, yet depth pieces such as Mitchell Robinson, Landry Shamet, and Mohamed Diawara are all expected to be part of the team’s offseason plans as free agency nears.
Keeping those players, however, could come at a significant financial cost.
New York is already projected to carry one of the league’s most expensive payrolls, and additional contracts could push the franchise beyond the second tax apron, bringing stricter roster-construction rules and reduced flexibility in both free agency and the trade market.
The future of Karl-Anthony Towns is another topic expected to receive considerable attention. The veteran big man is eligible for an extension, and the organization will need to decide how it wants to approach a long-term commitment.
Although Towns’ regular-season scoring dipped to 20.1 points per game, the lowest average of his career outside of his rookie season, he delivered several impactful performances during the postseason and remained a key part of New York’s championship success.
With a title to defend and a rapidly rising payroll, the Knicks enter the summer facing several important decisions that could shape the next phase of their championship window.
