The Timberwolves are not pressing hard in the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, and Kurt Helin reported on NBC Sports that Minnesota is among the Western Conference teams that have not come forward aggressively because Antetokounmpo prefers to stay in the East.

That matters because the Wolves have already built around a high-end core and reached 49-33 this season before advancing to the Western Conference semifinals

Anthony Edwards led Minnesota at 28.8 points per game, Julius Randle added 21.1, Jaden McDaniels scored 14.8, and Rudy Gobert anchored the defense with 11.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game.

That is where the reported East preference becomes decisive. If Antetokounmpo is steering interest toward Eastern Conference teams, Western clubs like Minnesota are effectively working against the player’s stated direction before they even reach the price tag. In that context, “retreat” may be less about a firm decision by the Wolves than a recognition that the deal is unlikely to gain traction.

Minnesota still has one of the league’s better top-end foundations, but the current roster is built to compete in the West as constructed. Unless the market shifts, the Wolves’ Giannis pursuit appears to be cooling because the variables needed to make it real are not lining up.
