Karl-Anthony Towns spoke on Thursday, June 4, ahead of Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, addressing a wide range of topics from on-court decision-making to global football culture and fan engagement.
Towns responded to a question linking the Knicks’ Finals run to Brazil’s historical World Cup success and whether he planned to follow soccer during the tournament. He said, “Yeah for sure we got a lot of soccer fans on our team me included. And you know after it’s all said and done I’m actually going to go. So I’ll be excited to be at the World Cup as well.”
He also acknowledged Neymar directly during the exchange, adding, “Also, shout out to Neymar as well.”
On managing his role during high-stakes postseason games, Towns described the challenge of balancing aggression and efficiency. He said, “No, that’s a great question and it comes with experience. You know, I’ve been in playoff series where I’ve done too much and it was the detriment to the team and I’ve been in playoff series where I’ve done too little and it was a detriment to the team.”
Towns continued, “So, it’s a fine line and it comes with experience where you learn what truly is best for the team and being able to find that balance of being aggressive and impacting the game with your skill set, but also utilizing that skill set to make others better. Something that experience has taught me and you know, I think right now I’m doing the best I’ve done at it.”
Off the court, Towns discussed his interest in creating digital content and revisiting early passions. He said, “I’m enjoying right now the sports card, you know, with Tops and everybody and just making some dope sports card content is kind of right now what I love to do. It’s a passion of mine.”
He added, “It was my first job before the NBA called, so it’s pretty good to get back to my first job. And other than that, you know, I just like to make cinematic experiences of my life and ways of kind of being creative and showing vlogs and stuff like that.”
Addressing the atmosphere around Madison Square Garden and fan excitement, Towns commented on recent scenes outside the arena. “Maybe a picture of me. I don’t know,” he said when asked about a potential 7th Avenue appearance in case the Knicks win the title. “I pray for the NYPD. It’s very funny, but it shows the love our fans have for us and the passion that they have.”
Towns also offered praise for law enforcement and supporters in New York, stating, “So, shout out to the men and women out there in the NYPD.”
On his defensive responsibilities during the Finals, he emphasized adaptability across shifting game situations. He said, “Like I’ve said to you and everybody I just want to impact winning so whatever the team needs me to do to impact winning and to help us get over the hump and get that win on that night I’m willing to do.”
He added, “Whatever my role was called to be that night, I will end up being a star in that role.”
Looking ahead to Game 2, Towns focused on process over outcomes, saying, “I don’t think of anything like that. The one one I just think it’s 0-0 and the next game is the most important game in the year.”
He continued, “Just continue to stay in the present not worry about what the future may look like. Not worry about what we done in the past.”
Towns also offered advice to younger big men entering the league, emphasizing preparation and consistency. He said, “I think for me, it would just be about locking in onto the film, just consistently working hard, especially early in your career, like just never leave the gym, just be infatuated with the work.”
He added, “The real gift about experience is you’ll find ways to accomplish the same goal and get the stats with using way less energy. And with that, that’s when experience really kicks in.”
Responding to a question from Spanish media about his evolution as an all-around player, Towns said, “Yeah, I mean just consistently working on my game, you know, no days off, always consistently finding something to do to take my game to the next level.”
He added, “So, even last night after the game, right after we got to a two and a half hour treatment session of just getting right for the next game.”
Finally, Towns addressed in-game adjustments involving teammates, stating, “Yeah, I mean, you know what Josh is going to do. You know, he’s going to play hard. He’s gonna be a dog.”
He continued, “We adjust, we adjusted, we stayed together. We’re a team and we understand what Josh is going to do.”
