Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson emphasized mental toughness and growth after his team’s 114-102 Game 7 win over the Toronto Raptors at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
Atkinson opened by acknowledging the opponent, saying, “Before we start, I just want to really credit the Raptors. Darko and his staff did an unbelievable job. They gave us all we could handle.”
He added, “That’s a heck of a team over there and they have a bright future. They confirmed who we thought they were all season.”
The Cavaliers coach framed the series as a major developmental test, especially after a seven-game battle that featured shifting momentum and inconsistent execution.
“I think it’s a mental toughness thing,” Atkinson said. “That was a tough loss in Toronto, getting beat at the buzzer like that.”
Cleveland trailed early in Game 7 before turning the game through a decisive second-half stretch, a sequence Atkinson linked directly to emotional resilience.
“Some of it was nerves and mishaps. The crowd starts to get nervous. I’ve seen that go the other way where you can crumble,” he said. “We’re not making shots. It didn’t look great.”
The Cavaliers’ response became the defining theme of the series from his perspective.
“I thought we took another step mentally this series,” Atkinson said. “This series galvanized us.”
Despite advancing, he admitted performance consistency remained an issue throughout the matchup.
“I don’t think we played great quite honestly, but the playoffs isn’t about that,” he said. “It’s about advancing, finding a way.”
Cleveland’s ability to adjust offensively in the second half proved critical, especially in reducing mistakes.
“I knew if we cleaned that up, that was going to be a big key,” Atkinson said, referencing turnover control after halftime.
One of the biggest turning points came late in the first half, when Cleveland erased a nine-point deficit.
“That run got our halftime mojo better,” he said. “The conversations were better, more positive.”
Atkinson credited Jarrett Allen for the defining performance of the night, with 22 points and 19 rebounds.
“He really took us over the top. That third quarter performance, best I’ve seen him,” Atkinson said. “He was absolutely incredible tonight.”
He also highlighted Allen’s preparation leading into the game.
“He was ready for the moment,” Atkinson said. “There’s a correlation between the work he’s been putting in lately and how he played tonight.”
Looking ahead to a second-round matchup against Detroit, Atkinson pointed to continued defensive and rebounding demands.
“We’re going to have to be mentally and physically tough to beat this team,” he said. “Hopefully this series prepared us for that.”
Cleveland now advances after a series where all seven games were won by the home team, with the Cavaliers holding firm in the decisive moment.
