Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum described an emotional night in his return to Madison Square Garden following the 112-106 loss to the New York Knicks on Thursday.

Tatum said the moment carried significant personal weight. “Yeah, absolutely. This was a big moment, big hurdle for me,” he said.

He admitted to pregame nerves and in-game anxiety during his return to the building where he previously suffered a major injury. “I was nervous and anxious to come back here,” Tatum said. “Especially like to start the game.”

The forward detailed how the early moments affected his rhythm on the floor. “Hitting the floor, I’ve been falling since I’ve been back,” he said. “It was just being back out there for the first time again. It was a lot especially in the beginning.”

Tatum explained that settling into the game took time. “So it took me a while to kind of calm down,” he said.

The Celtics star emphasized the mental importance of the return beyond the final score. “Huge. Today was important for me,” Tatum said. “Especially when I made the decision to come back and then made the decision to play today.”

He added that despite the loss, the personal milestone carried value. “I’m glad I did. I feel a lot better today. Even though we lost,” he said.

Tatum revealed the mindset he relied on to regain composure during the game. “To breathe and that it’s going to be okay,” he said.

He also acknowledged the emotional complexity of returning to a familiar arena tied to both highs and lows in his career. “I always enjoy coming to play here,” Tatum said. “The environment, the atmosphere had some really big games.”

He reflected on the significance of the location in his personal story. “Obviously the lowest point of my life was here but in a weird way it’s a part of my story. So good or bad it will always be a part of me.”

Tatum confirmed that injury-related doubts tested his relationship with the game but strengthened his perspective. “You go through ups and downs mentally when you go through an injury… but there was definitely a sense of gratitude,” he said.

He also described a striking moment during pregame routine. “When I first ran on the floor… it’s still with me,” Tatum said, referencing the site of his previous setback.

The Celtics forward noted that he is progressing through mental checkpoints in his recovery process. “I’m definitely checking off a lot of boxes. This is one of the last few,” he said.

Tatum added that his decision to play came earlier in the week. “Probably Monday,” he said when asked when he chose to return.

He also highlighted the reception from the crowd and opposing personnel. “The reception that I’ve gotten from players, coaches… has been great,” Tatum said. “When they announced my name it was kind of loud in there and that means a lot.”

The Celtics now shift focus to the final stretch of the regular season, while Tatum continues to manage both physical and mental steps in his return.
