Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra reflected on his team’s 135-118 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Sunday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. “Defensively, we’ve shown toughness throughout the season. We just haven’t been able to do it in these last several losses. But I know our guys want this,” he said.
Spoelstra acknowledged the team’s recent slide, noting seven losses in their last eight games. “We’re going to take this L against Cleveland. They’re two very disappointing losses. We’re going to go back to Miami and figure out how to get this one tomorrow,” he said, referring to their upcoming matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers.
When asked if it was possible to change habits late in the season, Spoelstra stressed consistency over reinvention. “We’re not going to reinvent the wheel. We already have several different kinds of schemes and adjustments we can get to, and we’ve cycled through basically everything in these games. We just need to show that toughness right now,” he explained.
The Heat coach detailed the emotional toll of the losing streak. “Nobody’s happy about any of this. We just need to compartmentalize it, use it as fuel, and bring a great game tomorrow. That’s the one thing we can control—what kind of game we’re bringing against Philly,” Spoelstra said.
Miami fell behind despite Tyler Herro’s 31 points and Jaime Jaquez Jr.’s 17. All-Star Bam Adebayo contributed a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Pacers, led by Pascal Siakam’s 30 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists, pulled away with a late 11-2 run in the fourth quarter, then closed on a 14-3 spurt to secure a rare victory.
Spoelstra addressed late-game execution and missed opportunities. “I think when Bam drove it and seemed like he got fouled, at that point it was a possession game and that really affected us. The rest of the way defensively, they ended up scoring, drawing fouls, and we just weren’t able to respond offensively. There were a lot of missed good looks that we’ll take a look at,” he said.
He also reflected on the challenge of keeping the team focused amid postseason uncertainty. “We don’t even want to get ahead of ourselves right now. You have to compartmentalize. We have a lot of competitors in that locker room. We know how badly our guys want this. We’re all disappointed at our performance that we’re not playing up to our standard. But what we can focus on is getting out of here, taking this disappointing L, and bringing a great game tomorrow night at home in front of our fans,” Spoelstra added.
Miami now faces a three-game homestand, starting Monday against Philadelphia, while the Pacers head to Chicago to open a three-game road trip.
