Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs is putting together a strong season statistically, averaging 24.3 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.0 blocks in under 30 minutes per game.
While those numbers don’t match Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s scoring output, his impact is especially clear on defense.
The Spurs perform significantly better with Wembanyama on the floor, posting a much stronger net rating and defensive rating compared to when he sits. His presence has been a key factor in the team’s success.
Some MVP voters have indicated that if San Antonio can finish with the league’s best record, surpassing Oklahoma City, Wembanyama’s chances of winning the award would increase significantly.
Wembanyama said he’s focused on finishing the season strong to remove any doubt.
“I think right now, there is a debate,” he said. “There should be, even though I think I should lead the race. And I’ll try to make sure that by the end of the season, there’s no debate.”
