Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra addressed the team’s second-half breakdown in Thursday’s 134-126 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers at Kaseya Center. “It started out, you know, start the half he [Luka Doncic] had three straight threes. That just ignited him,” Spoelstra said, referring to Doncic’s 60-point performance.

Spoelstra highlighted the difficulty Miami faced containing the Lakers’ offensive weapons. “We just probably weren’t active enough to try to get the ball out of his hands… we’re at our best when we’re disruptive and reckless,” he explained, noting the team struggled to keep Doncic off balance.

Reflecting on Miami’s defensive consistency, Spoelstra emphasized effort and system execution. “We know what to do. We know we have everything we need defensively. There just has to be an overall commitment to more… more disruption, more tenacity, more pursuits on the glass,” he said.

The coach also noted the Lakers’ methodical offensive adjustments. “They played a methodical style and you end up like playing 20 seconds of defense… it’s mentally taxing,” he remarked, adding that Miami failed to capitalize on deflections or rebounds that could have created transition opportunities.

Spoelstra addressed the offense, particularly the timing of contributions from Norman Powell and Tyler Herro. “The skill level with both of them on the court, that’ll work itself out… we need all the offensive firepower we can have,” he stated.

On the game’s final moments, Spoelstra acknowledged the narrow margin. “It was a four-point game and we just needed to somehow get two or three more stops… we couldn’t get it over that hump once it got to four,” he said.

Miami, missing Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Andrew Wiggins, trailed 39-43 at halftime but led early thanks to Bam Adebayo’s 28 points and 10 rebounds. Herro added 21, and Powell scored 20, yet the Heat were unable to contain Doncic’s second-half surge.

The loss dropped Miami to 38-32, holding the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Lakers improved to 45-25, extending their Western Conference playoff positioning.
