Victor Wembanyama of the Spurs reconnected with teammate Luke Kornet on Saturday, reviving their “French Vanilla” chemistry by setting him up for two alley-oop dunks during the third quarter, according to Jeff McDonald of The San Antonio Express-News.
The pairing of the two big men has become a fan favorite when they share the floor.
However, head coach Mitch Johnson explained that using both players together regularly can be difficult from a strategic standpoint.
Because Kornet typically receives most of his playing time when Wembanyama is on the bench, finding opportunities to keep them on the court at the same time becomes a “math problem,” as Johnson described it.
Johnson also pointed out that the limited amount of practice time NBA teams get during the season makes it harder to develop those kinds of combinations.
“If we haven’t trained and worked it out and really have a clear direction of what we’re looking for in certain situations,” Johnson said, “it’s tough than to ask them to go out in a game like that and execute at high level.”
