Victor Wembanyama’s dominant play has helped propel the Spurs into one of the league’s hottest teams, with San Antonio surging up the standings in recent weeks.
As the team’s success has grown, MVP chants for the young French star have followed, Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News writes.
Wembanyama admitted that capturing the league’s top individual honor is one of the goals he has set for himself, though he knows he must finish the season strongly to make it happen.
“Of course it’s one of my goals,” the player said of being named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player. “I also understand I need to press down the gas a bit in the last part of the season to win that award.”
So far this season, Wembanyama has averaged 24.1 points, 11.1 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game while shooting .506 from the field, .360 from three-point range and .810 at the free-throw line, all while playing just 29.3 minutes per contest.
The Spurs have also been on an impressive run, winning 16 of their last 17 games and climbing to the NBA’s second-best record at 48-17.
McDonald notes that Wembanyama faces stiff competition for the MVP award from players such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic.
Still, his teammates believe San Antonio’s dramatic improvement strengthens his case.
“We went from not making the playoffs to the second seed,” rookie Dylan Harper said. “There’s not a whole lot to debate.”
