James Harden addressed Cleveland’s defensive struggles following a 128-122 loss to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday at Kia Center. “We got to be better defensively. It’s just that simple,” he said, reflecting on Orlando’s efficiency at the rim and frequent trips to the free-throw line.
Harden noted the challenge of adjusting to new teammates after the trade from the Los Angeles Clippers. “Whirlwind. But like I’m still not settled. Like I’m still in a hotel… just trying to hopefully get adapted,” he said.
On defensive improvements, Harden stressed communication and awareness. “Communications, knowing… knowing who we’re guarding. Our matchup changes possession by possession,” he explained.
The star guard commented on Desmond Bane’s game-winning 3-pointer, emphasizing the league’s unpredictable nature. “This league is make-or-miss. If you miss that shot, it’s good defense… he makes the shot, you know what I mean,” Harden said.
Harden also discussed the team’s offensive potential. “Offensively we can score with the best of them. It comes down to getting stops and consistently getting stops,” he said.
Regarding his approach on the court, Harden explained how Orlando’s switches created scoring opportunities. “They were switching, you know, fours… so I get to my spots and whether it’s shoot the basketball or get in the painting and create an opportunity for somebody else,” he said.
Despite his 30-point, eight-assist performance, Harden emphasized team cohesion over individual scoring. “It’s whatever the game calls for,” he said.
Cleveland faces Dallas on Friday, hoping to tighten rotations, improve closeouts, and reduce opponents’ free-throw opportunities to remain competitive in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
