Although his box-score numbers do not always stand out for the Pistons, Ausar Thompson has become a key factor in elevating Detroit’s overall performance, particularly through his defense and energy, as Hunter Patterson of The Athletic writes.
Entering Sunday’s game, Thompson led the team with a combined 144 steals and blocks, and Detroit has posted a strong 21-4 record in games where he logs at least 27 minutes, underscoring his impact beyond traditional scoring statistics.
“You know how people have offensive modes where they feel like they’re on fire?” Thompson asked. “I feel like I have defensive modes like that. So when I get in modes like that I’m like, ‘Yeah, this guy’s not scoring.‘”
Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff also emphasized Thompson’s defensive value, particularly his effectiveness guarding pick-and-roll actions, which helps stabilize the team’s overall defensive structure.
“His ability to get through screens and get back in front of his man so you don’t ever have to bring two (defenders) to the ball lets our defense continue to play five-on-five instead of playing five-on-four or four-on-three,” Bickerstaff said.
Thompson has played 3 seasons for the Pistons. He has averaged 9.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 177 regular-season games.
