Deandre Ayton’s time with the Los Angeles Lakers has followed a familiar pattern seen during previous stops in his career, as flashes of strong play have been mixed with inconsistency.
While his offensive responsibilities have been limited within the current system, the team is working to maximize his impact through rebounding, rim pressure, and defensive presence.
Head coach JJ Redick believes there have been encouraging signs recently, particularly on the defensive end, and said the coaching staff is emphasizing ways the team can better utilize Ayton’s physical advantages.
After reviewing film during Monday’s practice, Redick pointed to several positive developments while also noting areas where both Ayton and his teammates can improve.
“There’s positive trends,” Redick said. “We did watch some film today. There was some real positive trends defensively. I think his spirit and engagement and stuff has been really good. I think for all the guys, if he has a smaller player on him, that’s an advantage for us.
“Let’s just get him the ball. I think it’s just thematically across the team, we have to pass it to each other more and trust each other more. … In terms of him running and putting pressure on the rim and offensive rebounding, particularly against switches and smaller players, he could be better there.”
The Lakers are hoping improved ball movement and trust within the offense will help unlock Ayton’s effectiveness, especially in situations where mismatches create opportunities near the basket.
Despite the optimism, Ayton’s production this season sits at career lows, averaging 13.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 28.1 minutes per game as the team continues searching for greater consistency from the veteran center.
