Detroit Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff addressed the heated third-quarter altercation during Monday’s 110-104 win over the Charlotte Hornets at Spectrum Center. The Pistons snapped Charlotte’s nine-game winning streak in a game that saw four players ejected, including Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart.
Bickerstaff praised his team’s composure despite the chaos. “I thought our guys did a great job of playing within the lines,” he said. “Our big guys in particular… deal with a lot, right? They’re treated differently as far as what’s allowed to them physically. Our group tonight did a great job of sticking with it, understanding what was most important and figuring out a way to win down the stretch.”
The Pistons coach clarified that Detroit players did not escalate the conflict. “They’re not the ones that initiated. They’re not the ones that crossed the line tonight,” Bickerstaff said. “It was clear, through frustration because of what JD [Jalen Duren] was doing, that they crossed the line. If a guy throws a punch at you, you have a responsibility to protect yourself. And that’s what happened tonight.”
Regarding Isaiah Stewart, who left the bench during the brawl, Bickerstaff explained the human instinct behind his reaction. “JD and Stewart consider themselves brothers,” he said. “If you run two guys at one guy and you’ve already crossed the line, human instinct tells him to protect his little brother. I hate it for Stewart because of the things that are going to follow, but we weren’t the ones that crossed the line and initiated this.”
The confrontation began when Duren was fouled by Hornets’ Moussa Diabate while driving to the basket. Duren then hit Diabate in the face, sparking a 30-second scuffle involving Miles Bridges, Stewart, and others. All four players involved—Duren, Diabate, Bridges, and Stewart—were ejected. Charlotte coach Charles Lee was also tossed after disputing a no-call in the fourth quarter.
Despite the disruptions, Detroit maintained control in the fourth. Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 33 points and nine rebounds, while Duncan Robinson scored 18. Jalen Duren added 15 points before his ejection, and Tobias Harris contributed 11 points. Charlotte’s Brandon Miller scored 24, with LaMelo Ball and Kon Knueppel each adding 20 points.
Bickerstaff emphasized that his team’s focus on fundamentals and composure allowed them to prevail. “Our guys understand what’s important, and they figured out a way to win down the stretch,” he said. “That’s what you want from your team in a heated environment like that.”
Detroit improves to 39-13 in the Eastern Conference, while Charlotte drops to 25-29. The Pistons will visit Milwaukee on Wednesday, and the Hornets travel to Houston on Thursday.
