Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson addressed the blockbuster James Harden-Darius Garland trade following his team’s 124-89 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday at Intuit Dome. The win came just hours after Garland was traded to Los Angeles in exchange for Harden, though neither player suited up.
Atkinson acknowledged Garland’s contributions while expressing excitement for Harden’s arrival. “DG had a lot of success with the Cavs and, you know, he’s a heck of a player,” he said. “We’re excited to add James. He gives us a different dimension. His resume speaks for itself, and I’m excited to get started with him and this new group.”
The Cavaliers dominated early, building a 20-point lead by the end of the first quarter and extending it to 35 points in the fourth. Donovan Mitchell led the team with 29 points and nine assists, while Jaylon Tyson added 17 points and Jarrett Allen recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Cleveland shot 51% from the field and converted 16 three-pointers.
Atkinson emphasized Harden’s impact on the team’s potential playoff success. “The number one thing that stands out is his IQ, his feel for the game,” Atkinson said. “He’s got great size, makes others better, and can score when you need it. That’s stuff that translates to the playoffs.”
The coach also shared his thoughts on Garland’s departure. “One of my favorites ever that I coached,” he said. “Those are emotional moments. I’m going to miss him. We had a great relationship.” Atkinson praised Garland as a pure point guard and a selfless teammate who elevated the team during his tenure.
Atkinson discussed integrating Harden into the lineup. “It starts with the relationship. We’ve already connected,” he said. “It’s too early to say how we’re going to use him. Right now, it’s get him acclimated to our organization and our group.” He added that Harden’s presence could elevate Cleveland’s pick-and-roll efficiency. “We’re a darn good pick-and-roll team as is. Now we have one of the greatest ever. He changes the equation.”
The victory highlighted the Cavaliers’ depth despite roster shifts, with new acquisitions Dennis Schroder scoring 11 points in his debut and Keon Ellis adding six. Cleveland forced 24 Clippers turnovers and converted them into 47 points, exploiting Los Angeles’ shooting struggles.
Atkinson also praised Donovan Mitchell’s leadership. “Donovan is selfless. He knows when to elevate someone else, and that makes it easier to integrate new players. He’ll help James find his footing while maintaining his own impact on the game.”
Cleveland improved to 30-21, climbing to fifth place in the Eastern Conference, while the Clippers fell to 23-26. The Cavaliers continue their road trip at Sacramento on Saturday.
