Jalen Green’s first year with the Phoenix Suns has been largely stalled by a persistent right hamstring strain, but his return appears to be getting closer.
Green has been limited to just two games this season after multiple setbacks tied to the same injury.
Suns coach Jordan Ott said Green is nearing the point where a comeback is realistic, according to Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic.
“He’s close,” Ott said. “We’re continuing to monitor everything, but he’s making progress every single day and heading in the right direction.”
Green took part in a 5-on-5 scrimmage during Tuesday’s shootaround, a meaningful step after months of cautious rehab.
Ott emphasized that the team plans to remain careful given how long Green has been sidelined, even as his eagerness to return is clear.
“He’s been out a long time, so we want to be smart,” Ott said. “At the same time, you can tell he’s ready to get back on the floor.”
Green will not play Thursday against the Detroit Pistons, but he’s expected to return at some point during Phoenix’s six-game road trip, which also includes games against the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets.
The 23-year-old was acquired from the Houston Rockets in the offseason as part of the blockbuster deal involving Kevin Durant.
When healthy, Green is expected to bolster the Suns’ offense after averaging 21 points and 3.4 assists in his final season with Houston.
