LeBron James addressed the Lakers’ 128-106 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday, emphasizing turnovers and Detroit’s physicality as decisive factors.
“Effort was there tonight. Guys tried to play the right way. Turnovers obviously cost us,” James said. “That’s a really close game going into the fourth quarter. We had points off turnovers, fast break points…we had a lot of pick sixes tonight.”
James credited Detroit’s defense and organization for their dominance. “They’re a very well organized team. They play hard, physical…Cade is playing like the number one pick that he was drafted as and a franchise player.”
Regarding Detroit’s points in the paint, James noted, “We understand that they’re probably number one in points in the paint in the NBA. They get a lot off fast breaks and in the paint. We try to make them shoot from the outside and they made some tonight, and that’s okay.”
When asked about competing with Detroit’s physical style, James said simply, “You match physicality with physicality. That’s the only way to do it.”
On team identity and roster challenges, James added, “We haven’t had a full team all year…there’s been a lot of in and out, very important guys out. That’s very hard to get a rhythm of chemistry on the floor. No excuse, still got to go out and execute.”
He also reflected on defensive struggles and transition points. “I didn’t think defensively tonight we had moments, but it’s going to be hard to defend pick sixes…we have too many pick sixes, we turn the ball over…we just have to get better on that side of the floor.”
James shared insight on his off-ball role this season. “I haven’t really been on the ball. I’ve been playing off the ball a lot. AR and Luka get us into our offense. Marcus has stepped up…Nick Smith will help with that role as well. Whatever helps the team win, it don’t matter.”
On his 41st birthday, James offered advice to his younger self: “Keep the main thing the main thing. Work hard…protect your family, protect your mental space…go out and just have fun, enjoy the ride, you never know when it comes to an end.”
Despite James’ 17 points, the Lakers could not contain Detroit’s inside attack, with Cade Cunningham scoring 27 points and distributing 11 assists, and Marcus Sasser adding 19. Detroit scored 74 points in the paint, exploiting mismatches against Los Angeles’ undersized frontline.
The Pistons improved to 25-8 and snapped a two-game West Coast losing streak, while Los Angeles fell to 20-11. Detroit hosts the Miami Heat Thursday, and the Lakers return home against the Memphis Grizzlies.
