Bill Simmons floated the idea of a major trade between the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors, suggesting LeBron James for Jimmy Butler. According to NESN.com, Simmons said the swap could make the league “more fun” as both teams have struggled to generate excitement this season.
Simmons described the Lakers as lacking energy and the Warriors as “dead,” proposing that James join Golden State while Butler fits alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in Los Angeles. “LeBron reinvigorated, and who knows? And then Butler is probably a better fit with Luka and Reeves anyway,” Simmons added.
James, 41, is in the final year of a two-year, $101 million deal and has averaged 20.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.7 assists over 14 games this season. Butler, 36, is under the first year of a two-year, $110 million contract and has posted 19.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists across 29 games.
Golden State currently sits eighth in the Western Conference with a 17–16 record, while the Lakers are fourth at 20–10. Stephen Curry leads the Warriors at 28.8 points per game, while Doncic averages 33.7 points for the Lakers.
Simmons highlighted contract timing as a potential motivator, noting James’ expiring deal could make the trade feasible. “I think Golden State would probably do that … ’cause LeBron is an expiring contract. … LeBron doesn’t really seem like he wants to be on the Lakers,” he said.
Simmons framed it as a concept “for the good of the sport,” focusing on fan engagement and roster fit rather than active negotiations.
