Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla emphasized the team’s speed and offensive execution after Friday’s 129-116 victory over the Miami Heat at TD Garden. “I just thought our effort was there. I thought our intentionality was there,” Mazzulla said, highlighting how the Celtics’ pace created opportunities against one of the league’s top defensive teams.
Derrick White led Boston with a season-high 33 points, connecting on nine 3-pointers, while Jaylen Brown added 30 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Mazzulla credited their offensive rhythm for the win: “Each game is going to tell a different story, and it’s easy to say what didn’t go well, but what went well was our offense.”
The Celtics dominated the fourth quarter, opening a 20-7 run that pushed the lead to 19 points. Mazzulla noted the importance of defensive rebounds in generating open looks: “Once we did rebound in the second half, that’s where Sam I think got four of his off. That’s where Aunt got his. That’s where Derrick got one of his.”
Mazzulla also praised rookie Hugo Gonzalez for his energy and versatility. “He was tremendous on both ends of the floor… he had it early and I thought he continued it throughout the game,” Mazzulla said, highlighting how his defensive awareness and consistent effort allowed Boston to maintain control.
The Celtics’ depth was another factor in the victory, with Mazzulla explaining the value of rotation flexibility: “We have a group of guys that understand winning, and we’re going to do what it takes to win, and that might be different each night.” Anfernee Simons contributed 14 points off the bench, helping sustain the team’s offensive pressure.
Boston’s ability to adjust against Miami’s offensive rebounds and varied lineups also stood out. Mazzulla pointed to seven first-half blocks as evidence of strong rim protection despite playing a smaller lineup. “We just played hard, competed, and then we were able to kind of push away obviously with our offense,” he said.
The Celtics’ win improves their record to 16-11, snapping a two-game losing streak. Mazzulla acknowledged the team’s responsibility to capitalize on opportunities and maintain consistency: “We can play so many different ways, and tonight it was like we’re going to win the game with our offense because of how good their defense is.”
Boston will visit the Toronto Raptors on Saturday, while the Heat, now 15-13, travel to the New York Knicks on Sunday. Mazzulla’s comments underscore a commitment to process, depth, and execution as the Celtics navigate the middle of the 2024-25 season.
