Harrison Barnes is taking a central role in mentoring the San Antonio Spurs’ young core, including Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. He told Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, “I think the biggest thing for us is just trying to cultivate a locker room where everyone has equity in what we’re doing.”
Barnes emphasized depth and shared responsibility, noting multiple players stepping up to help the Spurs secure wins in their 19-7 start this season. “Guys really being a part of that, really stepping up into different roles of the season… I feel like everyone is engaged in what we’re doing,” he said.
Highlighting Harper’s early development, Barnes praised the rookie’s composure at point guard. “He’s been able to balance different usage, different coverages, different responsibilities on the court… it’s been a great learning experience for him,” Barnes explained, noting that Harper missed time in camp and during the summer, yet has adjusted effectively in his first 20 games.
Barnes also reflected on his personal journey, recalling a memorable interaction with Michael Jordan. “I told MJ… the one pair of shoes that I wanted to wear were the 10’s… he was like, ‘Yeah, man, you gotta make a Final Four before you get ’em.’ Those were for sure my favorite Jordan’s to this day.”
On personal growth, Barnes avoids relying on New Year’s resolutions. “I really don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. I feel like you can always try to have growth and progress at any point in time… it’s always just about how can I be more present and how can I enjoy this experience every day,” he said.
Barnes praised former teammate Chris Paul’s influence, noting the value of veteran guidance. “I just want to see Chris in a situation where he can go and impact guys… there’s a lot of people in this league who can benefit from him,” he said.
On the court, Barnes contributes 12.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, complementing Victor Wembanyama (25.1 points, 12.3 rebounds) and De’Aaron Fox (22.9 points, 6.0 assists). His leadership fosters growth for younger players, ensuring they develop alongside the Spurs’ competitive rotation.
